A buyer's guide to CBD

Introduction to CBD

The amount of people who are using CBD daily is growing hugely. In the UK its legal and safe for you to do so.

We understand that some people know very little about CBD and some are already using CBD as part of their balanced wellbeing. This is to offer you a summary of buying CBD. There are more detailed FAQ’s and blogs that delve deeper to offer you a thorough understanding by clicking into the blog section.

New to CBD?

What is CBD? Read our more detailed articles about CBD in the blog section but in summary Cannabidiol, (CBD) is short for Cannabidiol, a compound found in the cannabis plant. There are over 100 different cannabinoids that have been identified within the cannabis plant.

CBD is a naturally occurring extract derived from the Hemp plant. The Hemp plant is a close-relative of the much-maligned Marijuana plant and therefore is vastly misunderstood. CBD derived solely from the Hemp plant is legal in the UK and offers a great way to maintain or support healthy bodily functions without the side effects associated with taking drugs.

The way it works is by interacting with a special subsystem of the nervous system, known as the ‘endocannabinoid system’ (ECS). This is the part of our body which has interacted with cannabis products since we started using them as long ago as ten thousand years.

  • The ECS helps promote a stable equilibrium affecting things like sleep, discomfort, memory and even mood!
  • The ECS helps promote a feeling of calm and focus.
  • The ECS can reduce exercise-induced discomfort.
  • The ECS helps support a healthy sleep cycle.

Will CBD make me high?

No. CBD is non-psychoactive and does not make you “high”.

Can you overdose on CBD?

No. CBD is non-toxic and as such no fatal overdose levels have ever been reported.

How can I achieve good value for money whilst maintaining high quality?

Consumers can vary their CBD intake by either the strength of CBD they take (i.e. 10% is 4 times stronger than 2.5% for the same quantity), or by increasing the volume they take (4 drops of 5% oil will deliver twice as much CBD as 2 drops of 5% oil).

There are many competitor products on the market with very low % of CBD content in large bottles, which appear to offer very good value for money. However, be wary as the low CBD content in them makes them extremely poor value compared to higher % CBD products.

Remember it’s the CBD that’s the expensive part of the product, and not the carrier oil. We at Goodbody work hard to offer the highest quality of products, whilst ensuring our products offer good value for money.

How do I take CBD?

CBD is absorbed really well sublingually (which means administered under the tongue) which is why the majority of products are available in oil format. This is by far the preferred format of choice by consumers.

However, there are a large variety of ways CBD can be delivered from adding it to your tea or coffee, swallowing in capsules or rubbing it on your skin as a balm. All of these formats are offered by Goodbody.

What’s my CBD dosage?

There is no definitive answer because CBD works directly with your nervous and endocrine systems so its individual to each person.

Therefore, the answer is that you will need to experiment to see what is right for you. Remembering that the FSA guidelines allow up to 70mg CBD daily you can trial a few drops or syringed amount to start with and increase the level if you feel you need more.

Try changing the time of day you take it or taking it after a meal. Some people need just a few lower level drops whereas others need a higher percentage for the CBD to take effect.

The % is shown on the products so that you can easily see how much CBD is within that product.  5% CBD content is a lower level than a 15% content.

Some people find that using multiple products simultaneously work best for them. Its perfectly safe to use CBD oil drops and CBD Balm at the same time so long as you keep the dosage relatively consistent.

CBD fortunately doesn’t cause overdose, allergic reactions or other hospitalisation problems, so you can keep upping the amount until you find what works for you. Some people have reported the usefulness of the supplement at as low as a few drops daily, which just shows how much it can vary. However if you think you want to try a higher dosage, our drops also go up in strength – we have 5% and 10% strength versions of our original CBD drops as well as a whole host of other ways to use CBD on our website.
